Best Zoo For Koalas

koala.jpgSomeone just emailed us asking which zoo in Queensland is best for seeing koalas.

The answer to this is purely a personal one from our own experiences, but if you want to get pretty close to one of Australia’s most lovable animals, the cuddly koala, you really can’t go past the Steve Irwin Australia Zoo at Beerwah.

For those on the Gold Coast, perhaps Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary may be preferable, which does have other animals to experience as well as the koalas.

I’m sure that many will dispute the claim and recommend the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane. This sanctuary has around 130 koalas  on display where the Aussie Zoo only has 9 koalas, but if you want to get fairly close, the Australia Zoo enclosure has the kolalas in trees that place the animals just above your head. Fabulous for kids to see these beautiful mammals just like they would in the wild.

Normally the keepers are close at hand to answer questions and allow the public to pat one of these beautiful creatures. They are also nearby to make sure nobody tries to mistreat a koala or try to awaken them from their sleep.

Koalas sleep for around 20 hours a day, due to their food, eucalypt leaves, not being high in energy. So often at zoos or sanctuary’s, the koalas may be asleep. If you do get to see these wonderful balls of fluff awake, you have a big bonus.

Why do we regard Australia Zoo the best place to see the koalas in Queensland. Because there are so many other animals, many where you can personally interact with the animal, plus shows and one of the greatest thrills of all, you can hand feed elephants.
