Winter Holiday Destinations in Australia

Winter in Australia is usually short and sweet, yet there are many diverse activities for the avid traveler. Some people from the south enjoy trekking north to the tropics in search of sun and sandy beaches, while others enjoy donning extra thick parkas and heading to the high country for fun in the snow.

Whatever your desires, Australia has a wealth of natural beauty, and the mild winter season actually makes some places more logical to visit in during those cooler days. For example, a visit to Ayers Rock in the middle of summer isn’t a wise move, as you not only will be burned by the searing sun during the day, you probably will be totally frustrated by the millions of flies and insects at that time of the year. During winter, the days are sunny and warm, the nights are terribly cold as you are in the desert, and it rarely rains, which gives you greater opportunity to visit those Aussie icons of Ayers Rock Uluru, Kings Canyon and of course Alice Springs.

Likewise, North Queensland experiences their “wet season” during summer and it could rain for weeks on end. It’s fair dinkum rain too. Torrential stuff that comes down by the bucket full. Yet winter in the tropics are balmy days where the sea is warm and the sun doesn’t burn you to a crisp. Temperatures range from around a low of 18 degrees to highs of 27. Ideal weather for southerners and locals to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef and the many pristine beaches found from Brisbane to the tip of Cape York.

Yet for some, the attraction of a yearly dusting of snow in the Alps of Victoria and the Snowy Mountains draws fun seekers from all parts of Australia. The official snow season runs from The middle of June to the end of October. Snow can be late yet most years there is enough to keep the most avid skier happy, with all resorts busy pumping the snow guns adding depth to the natural cover.

During this winter we will bring you travel news and latest images from the Snowy Mountains resorts of Jindabyne, Thredbo and Perisher Valley. We will also give reports on the popular Victorian slopes of Mt Buller, Mt Hotham and other snow fields of the Victorian Alps. We will also bring you news and images from the Queensland resorts such as Airlie Beach, Hervey Bay and many other popular getaway destinations. In fact, anywhere people are likely to travel, Funtours is also likely to be there.

Winter doesn’t have to mean staying home and not having fun. Winter in Australia can be the best time for a holiday in many destinations.
