Gorilla Enclosure Taronga Zoo
There
is something about Gorillas. They look wise, calm and family oriented.
For such powerful animals they seem gentle creatures, with the silverback
male their leader and protector. The Gorilla enclosure at Taronga Zoo
allows the public the opportunity to see these marvelous creatures in
similar surroundings to their native lands and to get a first hand appreciation
of their tribal interaction at close range.
Open air enclosures, such as the Gorilla exhibition, allow all visitors
the best possible viewing experience, plus it gives the Gorillas a much
nicer life experience in captivity. There could be nothing worse for
animals to be caged and at least open air enclosures, with ample space,
allows the Gorillas to roam relatively free, with many logs, ropes and
equipment to explore and use.
Situated almost in the centre of Taronga Zoo, the Gorillas are probably
one of the most popular exhibits. If you watch the people for a few
minutes, instead of the animals, you see respect and love on the faces
of young and old, and the pure enjoyment of seeing these wonderful beasts
up close, shows in everyone's eyes.
Best
times for viewing these animals are usually at feeding times when they
are release from their pens, after the keepers have cleaned the enclosure
and laid out the food. Each Gorilla seems to know their particular area
to forage for the food the keepers have left and there never seems to
be any squabbles, unlike all the fighting over at the Chimpanzees
enclosure.
After Chimpanzees and Bonobos, Gorillas are our next closest relative
with around 98% shared DNA. Gorillas belong within Great Ape Family,
which include Gibbon, Siamang, Orangutan, Chimpanzee, and Bonobo. Gorillas
should never be regarded as monkeys. Humans also belong to the Great
Ape family and perhaps could be regarded as the Super Ape.
Gorilla Feeding Time - Keeper Talk 11.30 am Daily.
The Gorilla enclosure is situated next to the Taronga Food Market and
opposite the Seal
Show arena. You can see the Gorillas feeding if you go directly
to their enclosure straight after watching the seals perform.
