Dolphins bow riding at Port Stephens. 3 hours north of Sydney lies an idyllic, unspoiled coastal area, with sandy beaches and amazing marine life. Nelson Bay is home to large pods of bottlenose dolphins and is a great area to see Humpback whales on their yearly migration to warmer waters off the Queensland coast for breeding and again on their return journey to the Antarctic waters.

Stockton Bright Sand Dunes are the largest continuous sand mass in Eastern Australia stretching some 32 kilometers along the coast and are roughly a mile wide.

The Stockton Beach dunes are a magnificent haven for a variety of birdlife and are a natural playground for four wheel drive enthusiasts. You will have a wonderful adventure by 4WD vehicle on the dunes of Stockton Bright and if your young enough, or young at heart, take the opportunity to go sandboarding down some huge sand dunes.

The Port Stephens area is really marvelous in that it's not that far from Sydney yet still a lovely natural environment. Nelson Bay is a charming township with friendly people. The dolphin cruise was great and we saw quite a few pods of dolphins. They seem to acknowledge the boats and put on quite a show, jumping out of the water and doing playful flips for us. We didn't see any whales unfortunately but the dolphins were great.

We had lunch in Nelson Bay then went on a fabulous 4WD tour of massive sand dunes at Stockton Beach. I really enjoyed that and I had a go at the sand boarding too. Great fun. Bus tour back to Sydney was good with a lot of the group nodding off after a busy day. Take this tour, you will be very pleased as I was.
