Kuranda Scenic Rail, Kuranda Skyrail and Tjapakai Tour (from Port Douglas)
The Kuranda Scenic Railway makes the journey up the mountain through tunnels and across trestle bridges that was originally carved out of the mountain by hand. Construction began in 1886 and the line opened in June 1891. The track is 75 kilometers long with 15 tunnels, dozens of bridges and more than 90 curves. Today the Cairns to Kuranda rail line is regarded as one of the most remarkable engineering achievements of all time. The most impressive part of the journey is crossing the trestle bridge at the Stoney Creek Falls. Usually a stop is made on the bridge for photos of the waterfall cascading into the valley below. You will have free time to explore Kuranda Village before boarding the Kuranda Skyrail for the journey down the mountain across the top of the rainforest. Try to visit Kuranda Butterfly World while you are there. Simply stunning. Kuranda Skyrail has 2 stops along the way where you get wonderful views of the Barron Falls and a walk along the special boardwalk where you can view the rainforest. You also get the most beautiful panoramic views of the ocean as you start the descent down the mountain to Caravonica Lakes. At Caravonica Lakes you enter the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Centre where you will see tribal dancers, watch boomerang throwing and spear demonstrations and learn of the deep significance of Aboriginal culture. This is optional and entry allowed only if you chose this experience at time of booking. There are many options to this tour, so choose which one suits you best. Prices start around $157 for a basic tour, going up by Rail and coming down by Skyrail. Added tours with entry included are optional. Book Port Douglas Kuranda Rail Tour below. It's a fabulous days journey into the clouds.
