Many went to Ballarat to make their fortunes and there was huge amounts of gold taken from the soil in and around the city. Today there is still gold mining operations continuing in Ballarat, and the city is a thriving community servicing the rural district, with tourism a major player in the steady economy.

This tour will show you around the city of Ballarat, with historic buildings over a century old, and give you an insight into the heritage left by those fortune hunters of the goldrush era.

There is a choice of 2 separate tours where you will tour the replica gold mining town of Sovereign Hill. Sovereign Hill has been built on an actual gold mine site and recreates Ballarat as it would have been during the gold rush period. See fabulous exhibitions of old machinery, antique furniture and have a try at panning for gold yourself. Sovereign Hill is regional Victoria's top tourist attraction and you can spend hours admiring the exhibitions and exploring the township.

You can also visit the famous Eureka Stockade Centre in Ballarat, famous for the miners uprising against colonial rule, the Ballarat Gold Museum which houses fabulous artifacts from days gone by, or the Ballarat Wildlife Park, with a wonderful array of Australian animals. This was a really good day tour. We took this tour December 2006 and really enjoyed ourselves. Sovereign Hill is that type of place where you could spend all day and not see everything and we just got immersed in the whole theme. We also enjoyed the visit to the Gold museum which is quite fascinating. There was a lady just after the entrance with some old matches, knuckles and things which my husband remembered seeing when he was a boy. Great tour and would recommend this to all.

We had a fabulous day on the tour that did Sovereign Hill and the Wildlife Park because we wanted to see a few Australian animals as well as the gold town. Really enjoyed both places but you could spend all day in either one so felt a little rushed, even though we were there for hours. Really worth the money and we got to see a bit of the countryside on the bus to Ballarat and back.
