The tree was very old, possibly 200 to 300 years old, and over time rot set in. Today there is just a stump of the once mighty redgum tree and the carvings that are so special remain. Fairies, Elves, Pixies and Australian animals adorn this magical tree stump, and if you are still and quiet, you can hear the giggling and laughter. Who could not smile at something so quaint and beautiful A plaque beside the Fairies Tree reads: THE FAIRIES' TREE CARVED BY OLA COHN, "A GIFT TO THE CHILDREN OF MELBOURNE" Foreword from her book, "The Fairies' Tree" "I have carved a tree in the Fitzroy Gardens for you and the fairies, but mostly for the fairies, and those who believe in them, for they will understand how necessary it is to have a fairy sanctuary - a place that is sacred and safe as a home should be to all living creatures. Ola Cohn loved fairies, and also loved children, but a world without
fairies was totally unthinkable and so carved fairies, eleves and other magical creatures into an old redgum
tree in the Fitzroy Gardens, dedicated to the all the fairies that exist in the world.
