Cooks Cottage Melbourne

captain Cooks Cottage, Fitzroy gardens, Melbourne. History is a marvelous thing. It gives us a look into the past, yet shows us where the future lies. When visiting Melbourne, take a walk into the real history of Australia and visit Captain Cooks Cottage, which lies serenely in the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens, just a short stroll from the main city CBD district.

Cooks Cottage was donated to the State of Victoria as a gift to celebrate the centenary of settlement in 1934. Many have questioned why the cottage wasn't granted to Sydney. As Captain Cook never set eyes on the Victorian coastline. Nevertheless, as the person who is regarded as finding the east coast of Australia, Captain Cook certainly deserves the credit of discovering the land that we now call Victoria.

Originally built in 1755, it is thought that Captain James Cook probably spent his youth in the cottage, until the time he left to become an apprentice grocer with William Saunderson of Staithes.

Cooks Cottage was purchased by Sir Russell Grimwade in 1933 from Mrs. Dixon, who was persuaded to sell it on the condition that it would stay within the British Commonwealth. It was then taken apart, brick by brick, and shipped to Melbourne in some 253 crates. Even a cutting of the Ivy, that was growing on the side of the cottage, was shipped out with the cottage, which still grows today.

Lovingly rebuilt in the Fitzroy Gardens, Sir Russell Grimwade handed over the building to the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, H. Gengoult Smith, as part of the Centenary Celebrations on 15th October, 1934.

Today it is looked after by the staff of the Melbourne City Council and visited by thousands of people from around the world each year. Tour companies make the Fitzroy Gardens, and in particular, Cooks Cottage, one of their main day tour stops.

Step back into history yourself and make Captain Cooks Cottage part of your "must see" attractions while visiting the grand City of Melbourne.
