The Conservatory within the Fitzroy Gardens was built in 1930 and designed in the Spanish Mission style. Entry to the Conservatory is free and is well worth the visit if you are a horticulture fan or just somebody that admires lovely floral presentations.

Always awash with a brilliant range of colorful flowers, there are 5 plant rotations per year to ensure the most dazzling display of horticulture, ranging from fuscias, begonias, hydrangeas and other floral arrangements.

The Conservatory Fitzroy Gardens

North entrance to the Conservatory. Not without some local opposition, the Conservatory was built in 1930 to house a floral display that some would argue is second to none, found anywhere in Australia.

At the time of building, some of the local Melbournians were opposed to such a large structure taking over open parkland, but today, the Observatory is one of the most popular flower houses near Melbourne City.

There are 5 plantings throughout the year so that flowers are in season and fresh.

  • The floral display seasons are as follows:
  • Hydrangea/Fuschia (November to February)
  • Tuberous Begonia (February to April)
  • Tropical/Poinsettia (April to July)
  • Cineraria/Cyclamen (July to September)
  • Schizanthus/Calceolaria (September to November).

Outside the Conservatory there are some well known sculptures featuring Diana and the Hounds at one entrance and a beautiful sculpture of the Virgin Mary at the other.

In addition to the wonderful display of colorful flowers, there is a statue monument inside the Conservatory, dedicated to Mary Gilbert, who was the first woman white settler, and the first white woman to give birth in the colony of Port Phillip, now the City of Melbourne.

Many people have their wedding service conducted inside the Conservatory, although this must be booked through the City Of Melbourne offices.

The Conservatory of the Fitzroy Gardens is another attraction within the park that makes this one of the most important public domains in Australia.

With Captain Cooks Cottage, the Fairy Tree, miniature Tudor village and some of the finest landscape to be found in Melbourne, the Fitzroy Gardens is a living treasure.
